The detail that matters
An exterior cushion has to let the water go
The most common mistake with deck cushions is treating them like cushions for a house. On a boat an exterior cushion takes sea water, rain and dew almost daily. If the foam is closed cell or the fabric does not breathe, water goes in and never comes out: within months you get the smell, and the staining follows.
That is why exterior cushions are built on open-cell foam, which lets water through instead of trapping it, and finished in exterior fabrics that dry quickly. The water passes through the cushion and leaves the way it should.
Indoors the logic reverses. There is no water, only use. Cabin squabs and saloon backrests are about comfort and finish, so they take softer foams and finer fabrics.
Awkward shapes included. Bow cushions, the ones that wrap around a mast and the ones that follow the fall of the hull are not a problem: patterning on the original reproduces the shape exactly, however odd it is.
Types of cushion
Each zone, its own build
Bow sunpads
Large surfaces, usually split into modules so they can still be handled. Light fabrics that do not store heat, with drainage across the whole base.
Cockpit backrests
These work vertically and get rubbed by backs and by the gunwale. Reinforced stitching along the edges.
Exterior squabs
Loose pieces that get stowed and brought back out. Thinner, with handles or ties if you need them.
Cabin cushions
Indoors, comfort leads. Softer foam, and the option of matching them to the mattress and the bedding.
Deck cushions
The ones that sit straight on teak or GRP. Non-slip backing so they stay put when the boat rolls.
FAQ
Questions about cushions
Do you need the old cushion or are measurements enough?
We would rather have the original: we pattern on it and the fit is guaranteed. If the cushion no longer exists we can work from a dimensioned drawing and photos, but take the measurements carefully, because the margin for error is yours.
Will exterior cushions survive the rain?
Yes. They are built with open-cell foam and exterior fabrics, so water passes through and drains rather than sitting inside. What they will not survive is being left permanently soaked under a cover, because then no fabric gets a chance to dry.
Can you match the colour I already have?
We look for the closest reference in our catalogue of certified marine fabrics. We do not work with customer-supplied fabric, so an exact match to a discontinued textile is not always possible. We show you the alternatives before anything is cut.
What if the cushion does not fit when it arrives?
We adjust it at no cost. Patterning on your original rather than a standard size makes it rare, but if anything is not right we correct it.
